Interlibrary Loan Services

Interlibrary Loan is open to all EKU faculty, staff, and students. The purpose is to obtain materials which are not available in the Libraries collections for the educational, research, and general needs of the University community. The service is free for all eligible users.

Patrons may submit requests through the ILLiad service. A separate request is required for each item. All patrons using the service agree to honor Interlibrary Loan policies and copyright compliance.

Interlibrary Loan policies are based on the American Library Association Interlibrary Loan Code and governed by U.S. copyright law (Title 17, United States Code). Using these guidelines the following will not be requested:

  • Materials for Reserve
  • Textbooks currently being used at EKU
  • Feature films (video or DVD) or non-instructional television programs
  • Recorded music

Loans and Renewals

Most items can be obtained within two weeks. Some arrive more quickly while some can take much longer to receive.

Loans are usually for at least two weeks with the option of one renewal. For a renewal, advance notice of at least two days is necessary. Renewals may be made through ILLiad or by phone; however, the lending institution may not routinely grant the request.

To Renew Items Online via ILLiad

  1. Logon to ILLiad.
  2. Select an item to renew by clicking on the transaction number.
  3. Click the Request Renewal button. You may request only one renewal per item. If the lending library doesn't agree to the request, ILL will notify you via email to return the item. Note that some libraries loan materials with the condition of no renewals.

For assistance, please contact Interlibrary Loan Services by phone at (859) 622-1415 or by email at ill.library@eku.edu

Library Express Services

Library Express is a service that supports the instruction, research and scholarship of EKU faculty and staff. This service offers free delivery of library materials to main campus faculty and staff via EKU Mail Services and email.

Patrons may submit requests through the ILLiad service. A separate request is required for each item. All patrons using the service agree to honor Library Express policies and copyright compliance.

Loans and Renewals

An item's loan period is dependent upon its location in the collection; copies of articles are sent as PDF files to your EKU email account.

Average turnaround time for delivery is 2-3 business days. EKU Library Express is available Monday through Friday, exempting University observed holidays or cancelations.

Copyright Restrictions
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request in excess of "fair use" that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order, if in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
